Ray dispersion strongly modified by a periodic index segmentation

The purpose of this article is to analyze the impact of an index segmentation on the ray dispersion in the geometrical approach. The presented study reveals that a periodic index segmentation of the waveguide along with a transverse gaussian index variation exhibits complex ray dynamics that strongly modify ray dispersion properties.

Dispersion of Discontinuous Periodic Waves

The dynamic evolution of linearly dispersive waves on periodic domains with discontinuous initial profiles is shown to depend dramatically upon the asymptotics of the dispersion relation at large wave number. Asymptotically linear or sublinear dispersion relations produce slowly changing waves, while those with polynomial growth exhibit dispersive quantization, a.k.a. the Talbot effect, being (...

Noisy Image Segmentation by Modified Snake Model

A novel segmentation scheme for noisy image is proposed. According to the analysis of wavelet denoising method and multiscale geometric analysis techniques, an improved wavelet denoising algorithm combined with multiscale geometric analysis is presented in this paper first. Due to the isotropic nature of wavelet transform, 2D image details are not well represented in wavelet transform, which re...

On Approximating Strongly Dispersion-Managed Solitons

We use a generalized scaling invariance of the dispersion-managed nonlinear Schrödinger equation to derive an approximate function for strongly dispersionmanaged solitons. We then analyze the regime in which the approximation is valid. Finally, we present a method for extracting the underlying soliton part from a noisy pulse, using the resulting approximate formula. Quasi Periodic Oscillations and Strongly Comptonized X-ray Emission from Holmberg Ix X-1

We report the discovery of a 200 mHz quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) in the X-ray emission from a bright ultra-luminous X-ray source (ULX) Holmberg IX X-1 using a long XMM-Newton observation. The QPO has a centroid at νQPO = 202.5 +4.9 −3.8 mHz, a coherence Q ≡ νQPO/∆νFWHM ≈ 9.3 and an amplitude (rms) of 6% in the 0.2 − 10 keV band. This is only the second detection of a QPO from an ULX, after...
